What is SMACC?

Social Media A Cappella Conference

April 1-3, 2011
Syracuse University

SMACC is a three-day conference that fuses cutting edge media and contemporary vocal music.

It hosts speakers from around the country who are building the foundations of a more connected world through their web based entrepreneurial endeavors. As society adapts to the digital revolution, it becomes ever more crucial for organizations and individuals to take advantage of emerging forms of communication. SMACC offers an opportunity to learn straight from the creators, how to best utilize these tools.

SMACC offers workshops led by individuals who are revolutionizing the constantly evolving, forward-moving genre of A Cappella. These pioneers are challenging the barriers of studio recording as well as live performance. They are pushing the boundaries of the human voice. Collegiate and professional performances enhance the conference by showcasing recent progress in the industry.

SMACC is a unique event that inspires students of all ages, professionals in all industries, and a population in which these two fields of social media and A Cappella are becoming ever more present.

Overboard to lead the Sunday Masterclass at SMACC

The SMACC team has added Overboard to the list of masterclasses!

Overboard is a professional male a cappella group based in Boston. In addition to street performing throughout New England and donating their services to a variety of non-profit organizations, the group has been featured entertainment for American Idol's annual summer camp and on the CBS Early Show's A Cappella Quest. Since 2009, the group has received 7 CARA nominations and one CARA award for Best Holiday Song for their version of "We Three Kings."

After reviewing the high quality submissions from all across the Northeast, our team has selected five groups to entertain all of you Friday night and compete to work with the headliners of our Professional Showcase!

SMACC Down Submission Deadline Extended!

Happy March everyone!  We realize that many of you may have been too busy with ICCA Quarterfinals to realize just how awesome an opportunity it would be to compete at SMACC. In light of this, we are extending the competition submissions deadline to Monday, March 7.  Remember, all you need to do to submit is post a video response to our “How To Enter” video – 3 songs max, and no, it does not have to be recorded for this specific purpose.  You can use a video of your ICCA set if you competed. Competitors will be fighting for the chance to work and perform with season 1 Sing-Off champs NOTA and innovative pro-group SONOS, as well as a few other great prizes.  Check out our “How To Enter” video for specific details and get posting!

Season 1 Sing Off Champions NoTa to Headline SMACC 2011 Professional Showcase

We are incredibly excited to announce that Sing Off Season 1 Champions NoTa will be headlining the SMACC 2011 Professional Showcase!

The musical feats of a group such as Nota are not something one sees every day. To say then that what these six young men do with their voices is music to anyone’s ears, is not an exaggeration.

That is why, when these Puerto Rican singers appeared in the first season of The Sing-Off (a reality TV program produced by an important American network and by Sony Pictures Television), they dazzled the judges, captivated millions of television viewers and won the grand prize during the show’s finale on December 21, 2009: to be signed by Sony Music.

Red States to Perform at SMACC

We are excited to announce that the CARA nominated Red States is scheduled to perform at this year's SMACC.

Competition Video Time Limit Increased

In the interest of honoring YouTube's new increased time limit, we have decided to increase the competition time limit to 12 minutes. The new time limit now allows your group to submit your ICCA set without alteration if you so choose. Can't wait to hear what you've got!

Peter Shankman to Speak at SMACC 2011

We are pleased to announce that social media entrepreneur, author, speaker, and worldwide connector Peter Shankman will be a keynote speaker at this year's SMACC:

PR Week Magazine has described Peter as “redefining the art of networking”, and Investor’s Business Daily has called him “crazy, but effective”. Peter Shankman is a spectacular example of what happens when you merge the power of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with pure creativity and a dose of adventure, and make it work to your advantage.

An entrepreneur, author, speaker, and worldwide connector, Peter is recognized worldwide for radically new ways of thinking about Social Media, PR, marketing, advertising, creativity, and customer service.

Sonos To Perform at SMACC

We are excited to announce that CARA award winning Sonos is scheduled to perform at this year's SMACC:

Emerging in the fall of '09 from the college vocal scene, Sonos turned the a cappella genre on its head with bold interpretations of C21st classics. On their Verve debut "SonoSings," the group reinvented Radiohead, Bon Iver & Fleet Foxes and dazzled with unique twists on the mainstream such as a dark, trip-hop Jackson 5 cover.

The group recently won the CASA award for the Best Pop/Rock song of the year, for "I Want You Back," and numerous ACAs (A cappella Community Awards) including Best Group, Album, Song and Vocalist.
